Staff Biography

Dr. Spunberg has been Board Certified in Radiation Oncology by the American Board of Radiology since 1981. He has also been inducted as a Fellow in both the American College of Radiology and the American College of Radiation Oncology. He is currently the Medical Advisor of the American Cancer Society’s Palm Beach County Unit, having served on the Executive Board for many years, and was the Unit’s Past-President. Dr. Spunberg attended Columbia University in New York where he received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude in 1973. He then graduated from Harvard Medical School with his M.D. degree in 1977. After a one-year medical internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, he completed his residency training in radiation oncology at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident and Clinical Fellow. He conducted research in radiobiology during his senior year and was awarded the Resident’s Essay Award from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) in 1981. Subsequently, he held a teaching position at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia where he also served as Director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. He relocated to Florida in 1985 to become the Director of the new Radiation Oncology Department at JFK Medical Center, a position he still currently holds. He is also the Chairman of the Cancer Committee at the hospital. He is currently on staff at five local hospitals, including Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and Columbia Hospital. Dr. Spunberg is very active in the community, currently on the Medical Advisory Board of the Israel Cancer Association (ICA-USA) and previously on the Board of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. He has been the recipient of several awards and the author of numerous professional articles. South Florida Magazine has featured him for several years as one of the top Radiation Oncologists in South Florida. He holds active licenses in four states, Florida, California, Colorado, and Arizona, and previously in New York and Pennsylvania. He is skilled in brachytherapy procedures including MammoSite, HDR, and prostate implants, and specializes in stereotactic radiosurgery using the Cyberknife, having been extensively trained in that modality both on site at Accuray in California and at the Cyberknife Center in Miami. He currently practices at the Radiation Oncology Institute in Palm Beach Gardens and at JFK Medical Center ’s Cancer Center in Atlantis.
