Staff Biography

We welcomed Dr. Agarwal into our ROI team in 2006.

Dr. Agarwal is board-certified in Radiation-Oncology and Internal Medicine. At Harvard Medical School’s Massachussetts General Hospital, he completed a Fellowship in the ultra-subspecialized field of Proton radiation. His residency training was done at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, which is internationally recognized as a center of excellence for CyberKnife and GammaKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Gene Therapy.

When Dr. Agarwal starting working with Protons, there were only three clinical Proton centers in North America. When he started treating patients with CyberKnife SRS in 2001, there were also only three operational CyberKnife centers in North America.

In addition, Dr. Agarwal is trained in a wide spectrum of radiation-oncology treatment modalities such as:

  • IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy)
  • IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy)
  • HDR (High-dose Rate) Brachytherapy
    • Example: Mammosite for Breast cancer
  • LDR (Low-dose Rate) Brachytherapy
    • Example: Prostate Seed Implants
  • IORT (Intra-operative Radiation Therapy)
  • CyberKnife SRS
  • GammaKnife SRS
  • PROTON Beam Radiation
  • Systemic Radionuclide Therapy
    • Example: Samarium
  • Gene Therapy

His areas of interest include treatment of Prostate cancer, Breast cancer, Lung Cancer, malignant Brain tumors and benign Brain tumors (example: meningiomas), Sarcomas, Head & Neck Cancer, and Skin Cancer.

His research in Basic Science includes work with MnSOD (manganese super-oxide dismutase) Gene Therapy, which has potential cyto-protective effects on normal cells. Data suggests that such cutting-edge gene therapy research may one day translate directly into a main-stream clinical setting to reduce potential side-effects for patients treated with radiation.

His undergraduate major was in Philosophy and minor in Poetry, at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., which he attended on a Presidential Honors Scholarship. He continued his medical training at The George Washington School of Medicine and Health Care Sciences.

He is a native Floridian. Both of his parents are physicians in South Florida. His wife is board-certified in Internal Medicine, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine’s FAU campus in Boca Raton. He and his wife have two young boys.

He is the CEO of HealX Oncology, which has partnered with the Broward Health hospital system in Broward County, Florida. Broward Health is the fifth largest Integrated Delivery Network (IDN) in the United States, and HealX Oncology is the exclusive provider of comprehensive Radiation-Oncology services to this system. He is Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Broward Health.
